The
The Institute conducts research into Polish and
world history, encompassing the period from the Middle
Ages up to the twentieth century. Some subjects are researched in cooperation
with other scholarly institutions, both in
It carries out two kinds of research:
– individual and collective
research, resulting in syntheses, monographs, collections of studies and
didactic outlines.
– documentary work (editing, encyclopaedias,
biographical dictionaries, historical cartography) as well as source-books and
research into disciplines auxiliary to history (e.g. heraldry).

The Institute has 23 departments and sections
with chronological or thematical profiles. Some of them carry out research into
particular regions of Europe and
Post-graduate studies have been run by the
Institute since 1969.
The Institute has an historical library open to all
researchers.
It has its own Publishing Department (Wydawnictwo
Instytutu Historii Polskiej Akademii Nauk) which, since 1991, has been
publishing mainly works which are the results of the research plans of the
Institute.
According to the data for March 1, 2007 the
Institute employs 25 professors, 32 assistant professors, 43 doctors, 19
assistants, 8 documentalists with diplomas, 23 documentary technicians, 5
librarians and 20 others.
