The Tadeusz Manteuffel
Institute of History
Polish Academy
of Sciences

The Institute of History was founded in 1953 as a research institution of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which is a corporation of scholars as well as a community of institutes representing various branches of learning. The founder of the Institute and its first director was an eminent medievalist Professor Tadeusz Manteuffel (1902–1970).

The Institute conducts research into Polish and world history, encompassing the period from the Middle Ages up to the twentieth century. Some subjects are researched in cooperation with other scholarly institutions, both in Poland and in the majority of European countries.

It carries out two kinds of research:

individual and collective research, resulting in syntheses, monographs, collections of studies and didactic outlines.

documentary work (editing, encyclopaedias, biographical dictionaries, historical cartography) as well as source-books and research into disciplines auxiliary to history (e.g. heraldry).

The areas of research carried out by the Institute of History:

The Middle Ages: the history of late-medieval culture in Poland and Central Europe, the history of social structures. The research takes into account the history of mentality and collective imagination, pre-Christian beliefs, processes of Christianization, ecclesiastical structures and religious life and the history of the Jewish population in Poland.

Early Modern Times (16th–18th centuries): the history of society and culture in early modern Poland in its European context (the history of social groups and strata, of mentality, of customs, of religious communities, of disasters and threats to the population), the history of the state and system of government.

The 19th and 20th centuries: the political and social history of Poland; the history of social groups and strata, of mass migrations, of totalitarian systems, the history of historiography.

Research into the history of particular countries and regions of Europe:

the history of Germany (especially Prussia and Brandenburg), of the Baltic states, Russia and the Soviet Union, Central European countries and the Balkan countries.

The main documentary works: editions of historical sources, The Polish Biographical Dictionary, bibliographies of the history of Poland, historico-geographical dictionaries of the Polish lands in the Middle Ages, The Historical Atlas of 16th c. Poland.

The Institute has 23 departments and sections with chronological or thematical profiles. Some of them carry out research into particular regions of Europe and Poland over longer periods of time.

Post-graduate studies have been run by the Institute since 1969.

The Institute has an historical library open to all researchers.

It has its own Publishing Department (Wydawnictwo Instytutu Historii Polskiej Akademii Nauk) which, since 1991, has been publishing mainly works which are the results of the research plans of the Institute.

According to the data for March 1, 2007 the Institute employs 25 professors, 32 assistant professors, 43 doctors, 19 assistants, 8 documentalists with diplomas, 23 documentary technicians, 5 librarians and 20 others.
